EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH PURPLE FUSION

“ Put your heart and soul for what you love, do not be a stagnant musician but keep on growing, and most of all do not be double minded “ you cannot serve two masters, nor can you travel in two boats at the same time , all you’ll get is a torn pant at the end” – PURPLE  FUSION

MASSIVE METAL INDIA - We would love to take you back to when you started as a band. For those who don’t know, (band’s name), How did it come together? What is that made you decide on the name of (band’s name) and what story does it have behind them? Who are your members and what role do they have in the band?

We initially started our band as an experimental instrumental band back in August 2012. The idea behind this band was to fuse Naga Folk music with other genres of music (which of course did not work out haha...) gradually we felt the need to have a female vocalist, that’s when the supposedly manager of the band Lamtsala Sangtam ended up as the Vocalist J
We chose Purple Fusion because we wanted to experiment with our traditional folk music and particularly PURPLE because the colour represents royalty, majesty, splendour and more so because it represents Artists in general.  At present the band is represented by Lamtsala Sangtam on the Vocals, Temsu Kichu on the Drums, Imsanger Longkumer on Guitars and Mhathung Odyuo on Bass.

MMI- We have 28 bands on list and the country witnesses’ bands coming up every year. What sets you apart and makes you different? Who are your favourite bands and influences? And why?

We think that one of the most important factors that set us apart from other bands is our amalgamation of folk music with not only one particular music style but different genres like Reggae, Blues, Funk, Jazz, Rock etc. There are other numerous folk fusion bands in the country but we see that most of this band either stick with rock or blues which is not the case with Purple Fusion, we like to expand our boundaries and see what we can achieve.
Well well, our influences!! Do not be taken aback J  To make our readers jump out of their socks let me start by disclosing that our Drummer Temsu and Guitarist Imsang are METAL HEADS lol....... though we won’t deny  the fact that we are all beginning to appreciate other forms of music as well. Lamtsala on the other hand is a total fun loving Rock and Roll/ Pop girl J And finally Mhathung the Bass player loves Blues, Funk, Jazz, rock and a little touch of Disco J

MMI- A lot of people as a band focus on subjects like social and political aspect. But what subject apart from the ones mentioned above do you have a keen interest in? What current messages do you convey which is important for the youth of today?

Well at this juncture of time we cannot say that we have a political, social or any other aspect that our band focuses on, we have been really busy digging in to our traditional folk music and trying to come up with interesting music that our fans can listen and relate to. Albeit one of our main focus so far has been to promote and preserve our Naga Folk music in whatever way we can.

MMI- If someone is interested in your music, what would you tell them to expect from your music? What are your favourite track you guys have recorded and Why?

If there  should be anyone interested in our music we will tell them to expect a blend of Indigenous and western music, Folk and modern music, and most of all a kind of music with a lot of Naganess to it J  We love almost all the track we have recorded but a couple of our favourites would be “ Ho He- You came along”, “Longmi Khi”, “Roko” etc.

MMI- As India is concerned in music industry, financial situations are hard for a band and it seems people give up on the search for their Dream. What do you think the Dream for your band is and are you searching for it?
Yes this is very true, and we are really sad that India cannot give musicians the platform and support that other countries can, unless its Bollywood you know! At the same time we are also very happy that there are some few Faithfull’s that are in pursuit of their original dream. As for us we are a very new band at a stage where we are just learning the basic trick of the trade, no doubt there are disappointments along the way as there has been rewards, and as it is with others It’s our dream that one day though we do not know how at present we will all be proud Musicians  telling the younger generation that we were able to stand the test of  Time.  Purple Fusion would definitely like to win a Grammy some day J

MMI- Maybe this is your first time playing at HIRC, well If you had to name one of your favourite things that made you guys decide to register and play for the contest, what would it be and why?
Yes since this is the first time MTF is organizing HIRC it is also the first time that PF is taking part in it lol  J If we had to name something that made us decide to register and play for the contest would be the Uniqueness of our music as compared to other bands and the Charisma of our Vocalist Lamtsala on stage, get ready to be blown away by her charm and energy J

MMI - What do you feel has been the defining moment about Your Band?
Which shows, gigs or concerts have been a turning point for you as a band? Tell us a stage where you had the most fun and the worst too?

Well to be honest there has been nothing like a Turning point of a defining moment for our band, We have been able to take the best and learn from the worst out of every show we have done so far. This year has been a year of putting together all the pieces in our Musical Puzzle J  Some of our favourite shows would be playing at the World Music Day in Dimapur, International Film Festival of India Goa etc.. And the worst show would undoubtly be at the Hard Rock Rising contest at The HRC Delhi   J

MMI- There are so many bands and young musicians today and the completion gets more and more every year. What advice do you have for musicians who want to make music their full time career?

Some important things  we would want to share to our younger musician would be “ Put your heart and soul for what you love, do not be a stagnant musician but keep on growing, and most of all do not be double minded “ you cannot serve two masters, nor can you travel in two boats at the same time , all you’ll get is a torn pant at the end” J

MMI- Thank you so much for giving Massive Metal India this interview, is there anything you would like to add?
Thank you so much and it has been an immense  honour for us to have written for Massive Metal, at the end nothing much to add but do kindly visit and like our facebook fan page https://www.facebook.com/PurpleFusionofficial  and do sing along with us when we are on stage J

MASSIVE METAL INDIA: Exclusive Interview With Grey Shack

Exclusive Interview With Grey Shack

Grey Shack is a 4 piece hard rock band hailing from Chennai India.
Playing at Hornbill International Rock Contest 2013, Kohima for the first time, Let’s see what they’ve got!
“We’re really looking forward to Hornbill. We’re hoping to play a kickass show there and we hope you love our music!”

Massive metal India - We would love to take you back to when you started as a band. For those who don’t know, Grey Shack, How did it come together? What is that made you decide on the name of Grey Shack and what story does it have behind them? Who are your members and what role do they have in the band?

We started in 2007, when we were all in college. We just wanted to make some music, and we leaned towards a hard rock and rock and roll sound. It was just one of those late evenings when we had a competition coming up and we needed a name for the band. The story of the band name is a little hazy, but the two words just popped into our heads. A couple of weeks later, we won that competition and the name stuck.

The current line up of the band is
Rohan Sen – Vocals
Vikram Vivekanand – Guitars and backing vocals
Conrad Simmons – Bass and backing vocals
Hudstin Fernandez - Drums

MMI- We have 28 bands on list and the country witnesses’ bands coming up every year. What sets you apart and makes you different? Who are your favourite bands and influences? And why?
Well, we don’t try to over-complicate our music, and try to come out with something fancy that people may or may not get. We believe that our music is honest, simple and makes you feel good. And when you feel good, we feel great, that we’re able to pass on that energy to you. Some of our favourite bands are Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, The Winery Dogs....you get the picture.

MMI- A lot of people as a band focus on subjects like social and political aspect. But what subject apart from the ones mentioned above do you have a keen interest in? What current messages do you convey which is important for the youth of today?
Our songs are very urban. They could be about love, about landlords, about paying rent, about freedom, about moving on, about a great evening (or steamy afternoon) with a woman. Our music does have a message though. Don’t take your problems too seriously. There’s always a way out, if you’re just willing to move on, live life and step outside.

MMI- If someone is interested in your music, what would you tell them to expect from your music? What are your favourite track you guys have recorded and Why?
They can expect a lot of rock and roll. Very loud rock and roll. Our favourite track right now, is a new song, that’s not on our first album ‘Step Outside’. We haven’t really given it a name yet, but we’ve been performing the song over the last two months and each time we play it, we feel like it’s our best song yet. We think it’s very well written, catchy and got some great instrumentation going on. Best of all, everybody seems to go back home with that song in their heads. That’s something you don’t get every day!
MMI- As India is concerned in music industry, financial situations are hard for a band and it seems people give up on the search for their Dream. What do you think the Dream for your band is and are you searching for it?
Well, it’s definitely true that bands face financial problems, but that’s mainly because most bands are formed in college, and the members don’t have a steady income source when they’re studying. But there are ways around it and they don’t need to give up on their dreams. The idea is to be really practical about it, and find a way that fuels the music. After all, there are many musicians in this country who have done it before. There’s no reason why some people can’t.

MMI- Maybe this is your first time playing at HIRC, well If you had to name one of your favourite things that made you guys decide to register and play for the contest, what would it be and why?
Well, we’ve never been to Nagaland, and we thought that this would be the best opportunity to visit. Hornbill has always been something we’ve wanted to attend, because of the prestige associated with it. We’ve just never been able to make it due to circumstances. We were even shortlisted last year but we couldn’t make it due to financial constraints. We’re really looking forward to the experience.

MMI- What do you feel has been the defining moment about Your Band?
Winning the Harley Davidson Find Your Freedom contest in Mumbai earlier this year could probably be our defining moment.

MMI- Which shows, gigs or concerts have been a turning point for you as a band? Tell us a stage where you had the most fun and the worst too?
Playing at the finals of Strawberry Fields at the National Law School in Bangalore back in 2008 could probably be one of our best shows. It felt great to go to another city and perform our music there.

As far as best show goes, it would probably be performing at the Harley Rock Riders concert organized by Rolling Stone Magazine in Kochi. That was one of our loudest and heaviest shows! And the energy that the crowd had was something that we hadn’t experienced until then! And worst show....we’ve had plenty. Can’t really point out one particular worst show! Hahahaha!!

MMI- There are so many bands and young musicians today and the completion gets more and more every year. What advice do you have for musicians who want to make music their full time career?
Just keep at it. When the going gets tough, practice.

MMI- Thank you so much for giving Massive Metal India this interview, is there anything you would like to add?

We’re really looking forward to Hornbill. We’re hoping to play a kickass show there and we hope you love our music!

The F16's

THE F16s

The F16s was formed after much shuffling and disintegration from previous bands that they used to play until they all just came together in late 2012. They have a black cat at the end of the street who gave them a lifeless pigeon with a note on it saying, F16s it. So they decided to stick to that name. Josh is the vocalist and guitarist, shank the bassist, harshan the keys, booby plays the guitars, and Vikram is on the drums.

They describe their music to keep tending to drift into various sorts of other phases, each of us filled with a musical tendency to explode into differentiation. Their influences are The Strokes, Artic Monkeys, The Foals, etc. With their music, you can always expect your feet to move, energy and lots of medicine. They love their music stating that “A creator loves all of his creation.

They are an independent band hailing from Madras(Chennai) and they define themselves as an Electro Indie Band. Through their Music and lyrics they don’t really give out messages as of political and social causes but their songs are rooted in tales, tales of love, heartache, freedom, weekends, parties. “Good poetry is when everybody interprets a song accordingly to his or her needs and desires.” They stated. The F16s are known for their high energy sets eccentric performances. The band released its debut EP, Kaleidoscope, sometime during August of 2013. It was well received and has helped shoot the band’s popularity.

Their Members are

Josh- Vocals/ Guitarist
Shank- Bassist

Nigambodh

Nigambodh

Nigambodh is a 5 piece Hindi Progressive Metal band from Delhi, formed in  the year 2009.The Name “Nigambodh Ghat” was decided randomly by the members while walking peacefully across the Ghats of Haridwar, later on to be called as Nigambodh. The band has spiritually alert members who drive lyrics that talk about existential dilemmas, of Salvation and Nirvana. The band is known for their experimental take on the progressive genre, the band relies on sounds that are a mix of metal, rock and certain basic classical melodies. The strongest aspect of the music that Nigambodh plays has been its lyrics in Hindi that rely heavily on spiritual, classical Indian texts in order to churn out pieces of songs that speak of existential and psychological dilemmas faced by the youth today. The root of their music lies in their ability to transcend genres and appeal to both, the posh and the local, the young and the old.

As such they don’t have any influence and defined genre. They create music and let the audience to absorb and categorise them.
Favourite bands/artistes is again a very subjective question for them  as each band member has his own taste and likes , but if brought down to favourite Indian bands/artistes that have influenced them are : Md.Rafi , Avinash Narayan, Avial .

When asked about their music, this was their reply and probably this is the best response we have ever got from a band playing at the great Hornbill International Rock Contest 2013 “I would tell them to expect nothing but to close there eyes , open their mind absorb in the feel and if this takes them back to their nostalgic phases , then the mission is done from our side .”
They haven’t really recorded the best track yet , it is still surfing in their collective sub conscience in a formless state .

Their Members are
Gaurav Basnet – Vocals
Manish Kestwal – Ambient Guitars/Backing vocals
Tushar Mohan – Low end Generator
Sandeep Juyal – Lead Guitars
Prateek Suri/Udit Mahar/Siddharth Kaushik – Drums

Yesterdrive

Yesterdrive

Formed in the summer of 2012, Yesterdrive Consist of Molee, Liem ,Haggaiand  and Sachin. They are an Indie/Alternative Rock Band based in New Delhi from Arunachal Pradesh. The band is  basically about creating those yesteryears unadulterated sound that each and every one of us enjoys hence the name “Yesterdrive”. The vision of Yesterdrive comes from Molee and Liem who while working together as a music enthusiast wanted to go back to the roots of pure, raw and independent music. Therefore on meeting Haggai from “The Mangalz”, an audio engineer by profession, who shared the same passion, called in Sachin, also from “The Mangalz”, a very versatile and talented pupil of music to cover the drums.

The band’s influences ranges from post punk favourites like "The Cure”, "The Ramones" to other acts like “The Sex Pistol". They don’t stick themselves to one form of writing music; it’s always different from one to another.  As they stated in their interview to always expect the unexpected! Although listening to it carefully one can find “Yesterdrive” written all over it. They write songs about day to day life so that anyone can relate to it. They have a released E.P “Hold on” which they believe have really helped them and has challenged them for more. The title song “Hold on” is currently on everyone’s ears but they are working on a new single too, “Fake Schemes”, which they are all excited about.

Street Stories

Street Stories

Street Stories are an indie, pop-punk band from Shillong, India formed in the year 2009. Street Stories have recently been performing at the various competitions besides a couple of high profile pro gigs that have taken place in the region. With a serious desire to make music their form of release the lads have big plans for the future.
Consisting of Pezo Kronu, Riko Kronu and Matsram Sangma, the band define themselves as an indie, Punk rock band. They are well known for their great stage act and energetic live shows. They have a good impression at all the gigs they have played so far.
The band was founded by the two brothers Riko and Pezo. And the two say that they have been breathing and talking music ever since they were toddlers, “Initially as we grew up, our minds expanded and we had the desire to get on further with our musical adventure and that was when we finally decided to form a band. Although, at first it was just the two of us and a friend who seasoned as a drummer but eventually left due to personal reasons. Nonetheless, this never blocked our way from building up our musical careers, we moved on forward with what we do best i.e. making music. Finally, a year later we met our current and permanent drummer, at our local church (Shillong Baptist Church) where we first played together, then we came to realize that he had potential and not only that but he also had the same common ideas, concepts as we did too when it comes to playing live. So basically Church singing has brought the band together and that’s how it happened.”

The band does not have any contradicting ideas or music to implement it on the sound of the band because they are all open to all sorts of musical genres and their taste of music is extensively varied. The band believes that tunes are tunes regardless of genres and that any song with catchy tunes and strong melodies are the key ingredients to a good song. The main influence these guys have in common would be the desire and love that they share towards making music and getting it on recordings/tapes for all their listeners and also for themselves and playing them live.

“The Apple & the Clown” is the title of the band’s debut EP. The album is a product of five songs spanning for about 20 minutes from start till end. However, the album is still in its shell waiting to be released. “The Apple & the Clown” is inspired by the relationship of the lead singer (Pezo) and his girlfriend. The “Apple” is referred to his girlfriend while he refers to himself as the “Clown”. It’s a rare thing perhaps, when considering of making it a theme for a debut production.
