Exclusive Interview with Colossal Figures

Colossal Figures, a five piece Progressive metal band from New Delhi is all set to play for the Contest Great Hornbill International Rock Contest 2013. Let's see what they've got to tell!!!

Massive Metal India- We would love to take you back to when you started as a band. For those who dont know,Colossal Figures,How did it come together? What is that made you decide on the name of Colossal and what story does it have behind them? Who are your members and what role do they have in the band?

It was the last month of 2009 when we guys met and played our first show at IIM Ahmadabad . The band name was inevitably obvious with our intent of making it big in the industry , Colossal Figures. We have Saksham Gupta and Karan Mehta on the guitar duties with Karsan Chaudhary on the bass , Rijul Victor on the drums and Govind Marodia with them vocal melodies.

MMI- We have 28 bands on list and the country witnesses bands coming up every year. What sets you apart and makes you different? Who are your favourite bands and influences? And why?

Mostly our music, we have taken our time working on the debut record ‘Clockwork Dilation’ and put in our sincere efforts into making it sound unique. And as musicians we all have our varied interests and genres of music we listen to. From Dream theatre to john frusciante to Lamb of god to Karnivool and modern bands like periphery and tesseract. You can pretty much listen to these influences in the album with our own style of writing.

MMI- A lot of people as a band focus on subjects like social and political aspect. But what subject apart from the ones mentioned above do you have a keen interest in?What current messages do you convey which is important for the youth of today?

Earlier we had written songs regarding the current political scenario. But this album ‘Clockwork Dilation’ is mostly a conceptual record with us talking about the generic human emotions and feelings.

MMI- If someone is interested in your music, what would you tell them to expect from your music? What are your favourite track you guys have recorded and Why?

We love all the songs on the album for our own individual reasons and the fun we had writing them. The listeners are in for teeth grinding riffs, sing alongs & A LOT OF freaking AIR DRUMMING!

MMI- As India is concerned in music industry, financial situations are hard for a band and it seems people give up on the search for their Dream. What do you think the Dream for your band is and are you searching for it?

We are lucky enough to have our own studio courtesy our drummer Rijul. That has gave us the liberty to take our own sweet time on the record and to make sure everything sounds as we want it. As far the industry is concerned , we believe in taking one step at a time. This is our first album and we have good expectations from it and likewise we have had crazy response from our fans from the two songs we recently released. If people are enjoying listening to your music there is absolutely no harm in making more and more.

MMI- Maybe this is your first time playing at HIRC, well If you had to name one of your favourite things that made you guys decide to register and play for the contest, what would it be and why?

Rijul went for the competition with Guillotine a couple of years back and from his experience it was one of the best stages he ever played on. Since then we really wanted to play there too.

MMI- What do you feel has been the defining moment about Your Band?

Entry of Saksham Gupta to the lineup after vikram parted ways had some major influences on the band and the overall sound. Since then we have never looked back and concentrated only on making more music.

MMI- Which shows, gigs or concerts have been a turning point for you as a band? Tell us a stage where you had the most fun and the worst too?

We played the Great India Rock festival in the very first year of us being together. That was one of the biggest achievements for us as a band. On that note, we really miss that festival and hope it comes back soon. Worst gig? Airtel half marathon, it was stupid of us to have even given it a thought and dear god it was awful.

MMI- There are so many bands and young musicians today and the completion gets more and more every year. What advice do you have for musicians who want to make music their full time career?

We ourselves are learning more and more with time. So don’t give up and be true to the music you make.

MMI- Thank you so much for giving Massive Metal India this interview, is there anything you would like to add?

Many thanks to you guys andthat’s pretty much about it !
